    Description

VERY RARE CAMBRIDGE GLASS CAPRICE CLEAR STERLING SILVER OVERLAY HANDLED BASKET
This piece was made by the Cambridge Glass Company, formerly of Cambridge, Ohio and is part of their “Caprice” pattern line.
This is a gorgeous piece of high quality hand-made and American made pressed elegant glass.
It is made in a crystal or clear colored glass and is decorated with sterling silver floral overlay.
This is a handled basket made from the “Caprice” # 54 belled bowl mold and has a hand applied crystal handle with “raspberries” at the points of attachment.
This is an extremely rare piece of “Caprice”; only five (5) of these are known to exist today.
    When the book
    Cambridge Caprice
edited by Mark Nye for the National Cambridge Collectors Inc was first published in 1994 there were only two of these known.
This piece is pictured on Pages 17 and 197 of the above-mentioned book.
This piece has been in my personal collection since 1988.
I am in the process of selling off this collection that at one time consisted of over 600 unique pieces of Caprice. This particular piece was certainly one of the rarest pieces I ever owned.
Even with the damage (please read the “Age and Condition” paragraphs below), when I first saw it I had to have it in my collection, since it is so rare.
The silver decoration is clearly marked “STERLING” in the pattern – see the photos.
I did give a bit of a polish to the sterling to show what it does look like when polished. I am confident the sterling will polish up somewhat better if you desire to do that.
A beautiful and rare piece of elegant glass!
There is a very interesting article on silver overlay written by Barbara Wyrick for the August 2007 (Issue # 409)
    Crystal Ball
newsletter of the National Cambridge Collectors, Inc.
It is online and you can find it by searching under the key words “Cambridge caprice sterling overlay”.
I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability.
Some of my photos may be somewhat lighter or darker than actual to better show detail or color.
However, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or with requests for additional pictures.
I will get back to you as soon as I am able.
I want your transaction with me to be exactly the way I want mine to be when I am the buyer.

    Age and Condition
The piece dates to circa 1930s -1940s.
Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item.
It is just as I bought it in 1988; at some time prior to this the handle had been broken off and re-glued back in place.
The glue on the repairs shows up as “an orangish color” in my photos.
The repair also included some sort of metal wrapped around the repair on one side of the handle, supposedly for reinforcement; this area also has an area where the glass is heavily scratched on the handle just above the repaired area.
There is also a bit of loss to the original sterling decoration on the handle down near where it was broken.
Otherwise, the basket is in near perfect condition; aside for some very minor roughness to a mold seams on two of the feet t
here are no chips or flea bites and no other cracks, hairlines or repairs to the glass.
Only some tarnish to the silver.
I see no areas of loss to the silver decoration on the body of the basket and it all seems firmly attached to me in that area.
The piece does rocks slightly when placed on a flat surface.
There are only some very light signs of wear to the underside where the piece sits; which is exactly what I would expect to see on a piece of glass of this age.
Please keep in mind these photos may be blown up at least 8-10 times normal, so anything you see will look 8-10 times larger in the photos than it really is.
Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece.
It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo.
    Approximate Dimensions
About 10.375” (26.4 cm) long by about 7.5” (19.1 cm) wide and sits about 8.5” (21.6 cm) off the table at the top of the handle.
    Approximate Weight
    About 2 pounds 5.5 ounces (1.062 kilograms).
    SALES TAX
I am required to charge 6.5% Ohio State Sales Tax on all purchases shipped to an address within the State of Ohio.
