    Description

SS THOMAS HEYWARD memorial Liberty Ship first day cover postmarked at Sacramento, CA on July 16, 2018.

This cargo vessel is one of a group of WW II Liberty Ships named for famous Americans.
Thomas Heyward (1746-1809) served as commander of a SC militia group in 1780. He was captured by the British during the siege of Charleston, spent 11 months in a guard ship in St. Augustine harbor and was exchanged in July 1781.
Before the war he had been elected to the Continental Congress in 1775 and he signed the Declaration of Independence. After the war he was a judge serving in South Carolina, he retired in 1798 and died in 1809, aged 62.
This Liberty Ship was named for the Revolutionary War figure from South Carolina. This 441' cargo vessel, named in his honor, was built by Alabama Dry Dock Co. in Mobile, Alabama during WW II and launched on May 31, 1942. The proud vessel transported vital supplies to US and Allied Forces until 1945. The ship was placed in reserve until 1977 when she was scuttled as a fishing/dive reef off Destin, Florida.
