I combine shipping on multiple auctions, so if you're a collector, bid on everything to get an even better deal, and then bid again on each piece for good measure! Why I'm selling these: My mother no longer wants them, and I think some other turtle-lover should become the new owner of these pieces.
Description: T
his is a set of three figurines in the shape of sea turtles.
FIRST FIGURINE: JAPANESE PORCELAIN
This is a figurine given to my mother by one of her friends at some point over the last forty or fifty years; my mother loves turtles and tortoises and has owned them as pets since early childhood, and so turtle/tortoise figurines have drifted in through the years. This particular example is a Japanese porcelain figurine of moderate quality; some Japanese porcelain can be absolute trash, but this piece exhibits a fair amount of lifelike detail. This piece is from the 1980s or possibly even older. It is brown with a white underside and a large air hole near where the animal's vent would be. This turtle's flippers are the contact points with the table surface; the plastron (underside of the shell) is completely lifted up.
This figurine has no defects, although there is some sticky residue on the underside of the flippers. It is likely this was originally mounted on a square of paper, as is the case with many porcelain figurines.
Specifications: 2 1/8" across (nose to right rear flipper), 1 3/4" thick (left front flipper to right front flipper), 3/4" tall (back is highest point), 12.6g
SECOND FIGURINE: STONE
This is a figurine given to my mother by one of her friends at some point over the last forty or fifty years; my mother loves turtles and tortoises and has owned them as pets since early childhood, and so turtle/tortoise figurines have drifted in through the years. This particular example is a stone carving. This piece is more recent, possibly ten to twenty years old. The shell and body are carved from two very different pieces of stone; the shell may be agate and is carved in a way that emphasizes the striated bands of color naturally found in the stone (reds, browns, yellows, and whites), whereas the body is a solid grey stone. The scutes on the carapace (scales on the top of the shell) are distinct, and the scales on the flippers are dotted on. This turtle's flippers are the contact points with the table surface; the belly, which is not made of agate but of the slate-colored stone, is completely lifted up off the surface. I do not see any signature and have no information as to whether this is an artist's piece or mass-produced, and not even a guess as to the country of origin. However, this piece is likely to have been the most expensive of the three shown.
This figurine has no defects.
Specifications: 2 7/8" across (nose to tail), 2 5/8" thick (left front flipper to right front flipper), 1" tall (back is highest point), 80.5g
THIRD FIGURINE: BRITISH PORCELAIN
This is a figurine given to my mother by one of her friends at some point over the last forty or fifty years; my mother loves turtles and tortoises and has owned them as pets since early childhood, and so turtle/tortoise figurines have drifted in through the years. This particular example is a Wade Whimsy, an inexpensive porcelain figurine made in England. This piece is from the 1980s or possibly even older. It is of a green sea turtle on a stylized green wave (and not, as it appears to me, on a bed of green spaghetti). The underside is greyish-white and bears evenly spaced textured horizontal lines in the distinctive manner of Wade pieces.
This figurine has no defects.
Specifications: 1 3/4" across (nose to rear of wave), 7/8" thick (measured at base), 1 1/4" tall (left edge of shell is highest point), 38.0g
