SS Chief Osceola: This 441 foot long WW II Liberty Ship was
named in his honor. The vessel was launched on October 4, 1944
by the J. A. Jones Construction Co. in Panama City, FL. The proud new ship
transported vital supplies to overseas US and Allied Forces during WW II.
The ship survived the war, was sold to a private firm in 1947, and carried
commercial cargo under one other name until 1965.
Unfortunately, the vessel was grounded off Chile on 26 July 1965
she was badly damaged and was taken to Greece. Records show she
was recycled for scrap metal in 1967.
The ship cover honors Native-American Seminole Chief Osceola who lead his followers into war against the American soldiers in 1836 in the Second Seminole War. He was captured after the war and was a celebrity prisoner until he died in 1838, age 33, in So. Carolina. He was originally a Creek born in Alabama, and moved to Florida after their defeat in 1814 Creek Wars. The cachet shows his portrait by renown artist George Catlin.
