Alcatraz was a harbor fortress, military prison and ultra high-security
federal prison in the middle of San Francisco Bay, California.
It is now part of the National Park Service's Golden Gate
National Recreation Area. Thousands of visitors take commercial tour
boats to visit the island every day. Alcatraz is the Spanish name for
the pelican bird species. A  Fox TV detective program was named
"Alcatraz". The lighthouse first built in 1854, was replaced in 1909, after
the 1906 SF Earthquake. The light was automated in 1963 and still
operates with a DCB-24 aerobeacon that can be seen for 22 miles.
However, this 84' unpainted concrete, tall tower is not open to the public,
but has a museum. (see web pages for a detailed history of this famous lighthouse)
